Las Manos Gallery
5220 N. Clark St.

Opening reception December 2nd, 7-10PM

The ART and DESIGN Show applies the concept that in order to have good design, one must start with original artwork. This creates a parallel between product and creativity, which generates the best and most beautiful environments. This December Las Manos Gallery unites talented local designers and artists into one space. Each business is invited to use their design method to create vignettes in the gallery. Work by gallery artists will be paired with each unique installation. This gives the designers a chance to showcase their vision and patrons an opportunity to understand how to integrate artwork into their homes. A FEW METAPHORS FOR DISTANCE is an exhibition of work exploring the artist’s connection to Ethiopia. The son of an Ethiopian immigrant, Zacharias Abubeker began the process of learning about his cultural heritage four years ago. After an extended project concerning Ethiopian immigrants and their cultural assimilation in the U.S., Abubeker was able to take his first trip to Ethiopia in the early part of 2011. In this exhibition, Abubeker is concerned with the ability to understand his own identity as a person of mixed race. Central to these works are issues of hybridity, assimilation, and the influence of developed countries in their dissemination of cultural practices globally.

I am the Queen

1542 N. Milwaukee Ave.
Wicker Park

Opening reception December 4th, 6PM

Doors at 5:30pm, screening at 6:00pm A film by Henrique Cirne-Lima & Josue Pellot I am The Queen takes a look at the often unobserved life of Chicago’s Puerto Rican transgender community. This film documents the Cacique Pageant, the first annual transgender/drag pageant held in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood. I am the Queen follows Bianca, Julissa, Jolizza and Alayna as they prepare for the Cacique Pageant and negotiate being a teenager and transgender in a predominantly Latino neighborhood of Chicago. The film exposes the restructuring of the family unit experienced by pageant participants who are often distanced from their biological family only to find kinship among others in their community. *Q&A following the screening
