I am coming to this party very late as I now live in Canada. I have been away from home (Clinton, Iowa) for over 11 years since I remarried. I grew up there, however, and knew Skip Willits at Mt. St. Clare College and beyond. His sister Billie Sue was my English professor for a time. His parents knew my parents, and my in-laws. His parents were "salt of the earth" folks who worked hard, raised their children well, and paid attention to their communities. I am not sure what to make of this entire story, but I will say this much. I trusted Skip Willits all my life. He cared deeply for his parents. In this world where we all too often move away from families, get disconnected with the intricacies of shared history, Skip went the opposite way. I just do not think he would dishonor his father by making all of this up. I was in his studio in 1998 after my first husband died, and he showed me some of his new work, ad some of the mask work, but told me it was not his, but said nothing more. I did not push the issue. I moved to Canada in 2001 and have been out of the loupe since then.
