Chicago’s own The Art Fair Company will produce two art fairs under one roof at historic Navy Pier Friday, Nov. 5 – Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010. For the first time, The Intuit Show of Folk and Outsider Art will share center stage in Festival Hall with Chicago’s much-anticipated art fair mainstay, SOFA CHICAGO 2010, the 17th Annual International Sculpture Objects & Functional Art Fair. “Collectors and visitors alike will be intrigued by the side-by-side fairs, each with their own lecture series, special on-site happenings and VIP programming,” says Mark Lyman, founding director of SOFA and president of The Art Fair Company. “It promises to be an exciting weekend of discovery and collecting for Chicago’s impassioned art audience and for the crowd of national and international attendees.”
SOFA CHICAGO 2010, the City’s longest continually running art fair, will feature 70 art galleries and dealers from 11 countries presenting works by more than 350 artists. A galaxy of acclaimed artists including Dale Chihuly, Lino Tagliapietra, Wendell Castle, Peter Voulkos, William Hunter, Ginny Ruffner and Leonore Tawney will be featured by some of world’s most respected and prestigious art galleries. Suppan Contemporary (Vienna, Austria), Ippodo Gallery (New York) and New Glass Art & Photography (Berlin, Germany) join an impressive roster of premier returning galleries including Heller Gallery and Barry Friedman Gallery (New York), Blue Rain Contemporary and TAI Gallery (Sante Fe), Litvak Gallery (Tel Aviv) and Galerie Besson (London). In producing the Intuit Show of Folk and Outsider Art, The Art Fair Company has partnered with Chicago’s Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art. The Center, led by Executive Director Cleo Wilson, is dedicated to promoting public awareness, understanding, and appreciation of intuitive and outsider art. Intuit defines intuitive and outsider art as the work of artists who demonstrate little influence from the mainstream art world, and are motivated by their unique personal vision. The Intuit Show will feature leading dealers and galleries including American Primitive Gallery (New York), Carl Hammer Gallery (Chicago), Hill Gallery (Birmingham, Mich.), Judy A Saslow Gallery (Chicago), Just Folk (Summerland, Calif.), Ricco/Maresca (New York) and Russell Bowman Fine Art (Chicago). They will showcase some of the most esteemed artists (many with Chicago roots) producing internationally acclaimed works of self-taught art, outsider art, art brut, ethnographic art, non-traditional folk art and visionary art. An extensive and thought-provoking series of lectures and special exhibits are part of the two-fair, three-day art events. Topics include “Advocates for the Arts: Polish and Czech Fiber Artists from the Anne and Jacques Baruch Collection” where a collector, a curator, and a former assistant gallery director will discuss the lives and legacy of Anne and Jacques Baruch, the legendary Chicago dealers who introduced Eastern European textile artists, including Magdalena Abakanowicz, to audiences in the 1970s; and “Henry Darger and the Unruly Paper Dollhouse Scrapbook” where author and educator Mary Trent explores the conjecture that some of Darger’s work was influenced by the turn of the century American craft of making paper dollhouse scrapbooks.
