The Flat Iron Artists’ Association Revives a Beloved Name
and Continues the Wicker Park / Bucktown Fall Arts Festival Tradition.
This fall, the Flat Iron Artists Association is reviving the Coyote name and calling this year’s fall festival “Beyond the Coyote”.

Beyond the Coyote is a three day art festival, September 10, 11 and 12. The show features over one hundred and fifty artists and performers. The festival starts at the historic Flat Iron Arts Building in Wicker Park Bucktown and is the showcase for the visual arts. There will be seven live music venues.
The coyote name and the art festival were strongly associated with Wicker Park Bucktown and for over two decades the Flat Iron Arts Building was the recognized jumping off point for the Around the Coyote Fall Festival. In the minds of many, the Flat Iron and Coyote were one in the same. Once again, the Flat Iron Arts Building will be the springboard for “Beyond the Coyote”.
In 2008, the Around the Coyote Organization
moved the festival out of the Wicker Park Bucktown neighborhood. This was a major disappointment to the neighborhood that
supported the festival for over twenty years. Since then, the festival and the Around the Coyote have closed their doors.
In 2008, the Flat Iron Artists Association was formed as a response to the departure of Around the Coyote. As a result, the energy and excitement that art brings to Wicker Park Bucktown is alive, well and vibrant as hell. Beyond the Coyote celebrates that excitement.
The Flat Iron Arts Building
The Flat Iron Arts Building is in the heart of Wicker Park / Bucktown and home to over 80 working Chicago artists. During art events, the Flat Iron is alive and magical, a labyrinth of twisting, turning hallways filled with the energy of artists. There is a delight and surprise around every turn.
Coyote? Where the name originated
If you are walking east on North Avenue, towards the six-corner intersection of North, Damen and Milwaukee Avenues, you will notice the Tower Building on your left. It is a twelve-story structure directly across from the Flat Iron Arts Building.
From this vantage point (especially if you are an artist with a few glasses of wine in you) the base of the flagpole at the top of the tower resembles a Coyote baying at the moon. This was the origin of the Tower Building’s nickname of “The Coyote Building.”
Back in the day, as groups of artists made plans for the evening, they would often say, “Let’s meet around the coyote.”
