Peter Schjeldahl to Give Speech in Chicago at GSU
Editor’s Intro: the information is below, but I’ll add that we almost named Chicago Art Magazine after Schjeldahl. He once wrote, “art is the sex life of money” and I thought that was so outstanding I wanted to name the site, “The Sex Life of Money” or “SLOaM”.
But I was out-voted, so we went with Chicago Art Magazine. However, Schjeldahl is that good. He’s worthy of spell check’s “add this word to dictionary” good, and he hasn’t been here in over a decade. So.. oh, I don’t know, if we care about criticism like we say we do, let’s do some carpooling and make the one-hour trip to Governors State University
Here’s the 411:
Peter Schjeldahl, chief art critic for “The New Yorker” magazine, will visit Governors State University in University Park to receive an honorary degree at Spring Commencement and present a guest lecture on art.
Schjeldahl will speak on Friday, June 11, at 3:30 p.m., in Engbretson Hall. “A Conversation with Peter Schjeldahl” will highlight his insights into contemporary art. Drawing upon his years of experience and his clear eloquence, Schjeldahl will invite his audience into the world of art. His observations are compelling. He has no agenda but to help his readers find their connection to the art he reviews.
In addition to “The New Yorker,” he has contributed to “ArtNews,” “The New York Times,” “The Village Voice,” and “7 Days.”
This lecture is free and open to the public. GSU is located at 1 University Parkway, University Park, Illinois. For more information, call (708) 534-4130.
