Jim had the most integrity of any leader I've ever worked with, and his love of art was quiet and inspiring at the same time. After 9/11, he wanted the Art Institute to be a refuge of solace for visitors, resulting in the installation of Meyerowitz's photos of the towers in the meditative Ando gallery that I'll never forget. He understood that a great art museum is both a spiritual home and the vibrant center of a city, and he worked to protect both aspects. We owe much to him.
