Jun-Jun Sta.Ana’s exhibit, which closes next Monday, May 31st at Center on Halsted is called Bulong From Within: Motifs, Invocations and Incarnations. “Bulong” is Filipino term that literally means “whisper” or “medicine”, but the title refers to Bulong’s meaning as a prayer performed by a spiritual practitioner, one uses amulets for protection, and one who “feeds” the amulet so it may maintain its strength.
As described by Jeff Stevenson of the Chicago Museum Examiner:
“His work exudes a playfulness that at times conjures Robert Rauschenberg’s prolific creative career, finding inspiration in everything from furniture design to music, to found images. By “employing multiples, texts, and symbols” Jun-Jun presents familiar images that are then lost in a sea of repetition to address issues of identity. At times color takes the lead in works such as “Destruction” where the viewer is presented with a blast of visual information. In his Botanical series, Sta.Ana uses black and white to present elegant forms that maintain the joyful spirit of the color works, while quietly creating compositions that simultaneously connote human and plant forms. ”
Sta.Ana has shown his work in dozens of exhibits, including an incarnation of this current exhibit in the Philipines.
