B-Fest at Northwestern University
(thank you Gaper’s Block)
Oh God, it’s B-fest. Gaper’s Block mentioned it and I had a visceral reaction – memories of my youth flooding back. So here’s your chance: get locked in a building (literally - if you leave late at night, you can’t re-enter) for 24 hours with young people on acid, and watch movies that are so bad, they’re incredible. It’s like the Rocky Horror Picture Show, everyone’s yelling along with the old standbys, they’re probaby still playing “The Wizard of Space and Time” backwards, just like 20 years ago.

Hollis Sigler: Expect the Unexpected
Date: Friday, January 29, 2010
Time: 6:00pm – 8:00pm
Location: Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St.
Hollis Sigler found her artistic voice in the unrestrained drawings of her youth, but the Chicago artists vi
brantly colored faux-naive style draws in viewers only to reveal emotion-laden and very personal content. Reflecting on passion, fear, romance, escape, desire, suburban entrapment, and dreams of fame, the psychologically complex narratives each reveal the aftermath of a scenario but leave the viewer to solve the mystery of what has occurred.
Touch with Your Eyes: Recent Work by Angel Otero
Date: Friday, January 29, 2010
Time: 6:00pm – 8:00pm
Location: Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St.
The deeply personal and passionate paintings and sculptures of Angel Otero have made a mark on the cultural scene over the past few years. Otero, having just completed his MFA degree at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago this spring, was one of only four awardees nationwide to receive the prestigious Leonore Annenberg Fellowship in the visual arts this year, which will support his work over a two-year period in New York. This exhibition at the Cultural Center will be Otero’s largest solo show to date; it will bring toget
her some 12-15 new works from the artist’s studio and private collections as evidence of his masterful use of materials, as well as revealing his ideas that stem from growing up in Puerto Rico and training in Chicago.

Date: Friday, January 29, 2010
Time: 6:00pm – 8:00pm
Location: Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St.
In her largest and most comprehensive exhibition to date, Christine Tarkowski continues to anal
yze the systems of belief that pervade and shape our lives. From large-scale cast iron sculptures that examine the ascent and descent of the automobile to modest etchings of satellites in orbit, her recent work highlights rituals performed in a void. Tarkowski even constructs her own faith-based system for non-existent congregants with a concrete geodesic dome serving as a place of worship and an alt-gospel soundtrack by Jon Langford.
