Lipstick at Russell Bowman

Simple lithograph meets edited porno-graph. Empowered and phallic, erect and high tech. Though modestly sized and subdued in its select colored tints, Claes Oldenburg’s Lipstick (1972) is undoubtedly a print with presence.

Oldenburg illustrates a conventional symbol of femininity with an alternative perspective of clear overtones of masculinity. He is not only provocative in this original display, but also completely innovative in creating a new, slick, masculine seductress.
The lithograph exhibits sculptural, architectural, and methodical line, while noting a descriptive caption, “Lipstick (ascending) on caterpillar track.” Despite the obvious lipstick ascent, other ambiguous words embedded within the nearly instructional diagram are three simple, capitalized words: VALVE, BOLT, PUMP. None of these words are exhibited within the image, but allow the print to take on a new type of imaginary animate quality.
