Spotlight: Flat Iron Building and the $1,000 Contest for Artwork About an Intersection

Ok, so this is a sponsored post for Sapere.  BUT, as I got the details ready to post and saw in on Chicago Gallery News, this actually looks interesting, so all the additional plugging, gushing, wild stories and name dropping is just me.

Its First Friday at the Flat Iron on Friday, October 2 – Party starts at 6pm and goes until 9 – or “later”. You can find a downloadable schedule and building diagram so you can find all the artists’ studios in the FIB labyrinth

I curated a show in the Flat Iron and can testify that a core group of artists that are really pulling for the place to be a hotspot. It’s in the middle of goddman Wicker Park, for chrissakes, it should be an art empire. So with Gary Marr’s Sapere (our beloved sponsor), Kevin Lahvic who was in my show, and our beloved Steve Kush Ruiz, all working to re-brand the place, it seems to be on an upswing.

Here’s the info:

In addition the First Friday open studios,  tonight celebrates the opening of Sapere Art’s Plein Air Competition. Forty artists took to the streets of Wicker Park to compete for a $1000 cash prize.  The subject of the work is the  “six points” intersection of North, Milwaukee and Damen. (In my wilder days, I once did a very famous 3-point turn in this middle of this intersection)

The competition’s artwork will hang around the building for First Friday, then the continuing show will be held in Sapere Art starting October 3, Open daily, 12n-5pm, closed on tuesdays until October 18.

Located at 1579 N. Milwaukee on the aforementioned corner.
